Radiator fitment issues

Need some radiator fitment advice. Should the radiator support channel at bottom have any sort of cushioning to protect the lower radiator tank? I removed the unattractive aluminum unit and purchased a new copper/brass unit from US Radiator. The piece looks beautiful and high quality, but when  lower it in place it sits a bit high and the hood contacts the filler neck. The unit is supposed to be an exact fit, and  don’t mind a little tweaking if necessary. See photo of support bracket. Thanks, duh. Vehicle is 1951 Chevy Styleline Deluxe 4D 216 with 3 speed manual

Nothing on the inside of the core support.

If you have the radiator all the way in the support and there is hood interference, I would be concerned that the radiator may not be correct.

There are shims and rubber pads located below the core support. It is possible to remove some height by reducing the quantity of shims and/or rubber pads.

It could be that there are an excessive number of shims and/or rubber pads due to trying to make the previous aluminum radiator fit properly?

If the radiator is an "exact fit", the fastener holes where it bolts to the core support should line up when you position it. If those holes line up and the hood hits it, I suspect it's the wrong radiator.

I have the original OEM radiator and support bracket out of my 51 Bel Air . I can get some measurements for you if you want.

@tiny I will double check that, it was barely touching, maybe 1/4 inch to high. Maybe I do have it properly seated in the bottom of the core support, it was late and  was tired!

 Thanks

@steve-d That would be great, no rush of course. It will give me some further benchmarks

Thanks

@drtyler    Would think the radiator would need some type of cushioning to protect the bottom from vibration etc, or do the mounting bolts essentially eliminate that possibility?

correct, radiator is bolted securely to the core support. The core support is bolted securely to the car.  No worries there.

@tomp From the bottom of the support to the top of the radiator cap I have 27" and 26-5/8" to the top of the tank. The height is 23-1/2" top to bottom of tanks with the cap 3/8" higher.
