Wondering if anyone has any input on where to acquire new valve lifters for my 28 truck engine?  I'm not necessarily saying I know I need them but I wanted to finally get my engine rebuild done here over this winter and was going to have the cam reground.  Egge advised to put new lifters in on a reground cam but has no source for them.  The filling station gets all those parts from Egge so they can't help.  I did not reach out to Gary Wallace.  Just thought I would put the question out there.  I didn't look through the Schools in Session to see what was used there.  I know Dean didn't use new lifters in his resurrecting a 4-banger rebuild.

Thanks,

David

I did talk to Gary Wallace and he offers a regrind exchange on lifter sets for 160.00  Said they have been doing it for years successfully.  Not sure what other option I'd have.

@david-siedschlag David, There is a Machine shop in Effingham IL that regrinds cams. I would guess that they offer tappet resurfacing as well.

Personal opinion based on observation of others' mishaps. New cams and lifters are hit & miss at best with many being junk out of the box. The lifters you have, have proven themselves durable over the years so, if a regrind service is available, I would use it if it was my decision to make.

There is a cam grinding service in Vancouver Washington who will do it all for you. Regrind the cam, regrind and crown the lifters, and regrind the rocker to valve stem surface in an arc as original.

On my last cam I had him do for me I had him rework the lift. In my opinion the biggest restriction to the cylinder air intake is the tiny 3/16" lift. Even with the 1-1/2 to one leverage advantage gained the valve is only opening 1/4". he added .045" to the cam grind which should open the valve almost an extra 1/16".

Another plus was that you don't have to pull off the fiber cam gear to have the cam ground. Many times that gear will be destroyed in the process of removing it. They are not being reproduced and are getting hard to source.

This sorta puzzles me but I think I get it how one can add to the opening of the valve.  Its a matter of ratio of the lobe height verses the opposite side of cam?

I did get a hold of Effingham Machine and they can do it and gave me a price.  Any idea Arthur what the guy in Washington charges?  Also in reading various threads I think it has been stated that it's almost impossible to get the fiber cam gear off without breaking it.  I don't imagine the cam can be ground with it on?  I wasn't planning on changing it.  I've also read mostly on sites where guys get their tractor cams ground, and it seems more specific to John Deeres, that the timing ends up being off after a grind and one has to make up for it by jumping a tooth on the gear but I think that had more to do with a shop that did a poor grind.

I have had cam work done by Effingham Regrinding. They are a top notch operation, highly recommended. Prices are reasonable to boot.
