I want to give everyone a heads-up on steering box free play. I purchased my '25 sedan in 2003. From day one it had a lot of free play in the steering box. (about 60 degrees before tires moved) I had asked about it on the VCCA site and the only info I received was that the bushing was worn. One gentleman posted how he machined a new bushing offset by .010" and fixed it. Well after 22 years the steering wheel just spun like a top. No steering at all, so I had the car towed home. I removed the steering box and column assembly and opened it up on my bench. This is what I found. The bushing was just fine. Someone many years ago packed the steering box with wheel bearing grease instead of using "W600 gear oil." The grease is pushed out of the area of the gears contacting together, so it was just metal to metal contact. After looking for another gear box, (no luck) I noticed only 5 of the 14 teeth on the gear are used. So, I turned the gear 180 degrees and reinstalled it and put new gaskets and the correct gear oil in it; now it is like new. If you are having free play problems in your steering; take a few minutes and loosen the 4 bolts on the side cover and check to see if someone didn't pack the steering box with bearing grease.

Hi Stephen

If leakage is a problem, you can also use an NLGI 00 grease (which is semi fluid and flows) and was what Chevrolet recommended later on.

This is NOT the same as corn head grease, which is an NLGI 0 and does not flow.

With NLGI 00, topping up just once a year may be often enough.
