I thought it was a Model K because The tag on Pass side said  Superior -K but I see under there the car number is 21V 27712   The number on the engine block says 24 04604 so do I have a model V since in the book it is showing more things like a v instead of a K model

  • G'Day,..........A couple things to consider.    There was some cross over of parts late 1925 model into 1926.   The early 25's had a gear driven generator mounted on the passenger side. Late 25 into 26 the generator is belt driven on the driver's side. The 25 had a "buzz" horn mounted through the firewall on the passenger side.  The late 25 into 26 had the 8C Klaxon motor horn on the engine near the exhaust manifold.   The headlights on 25 were mounted into the fenders while late 25 into 26 were mounted on a bar connecting the fenders.   There are others here who can comment on the vin plate, but I suspect it would be a 26 model year if it has the "V".   The early 25's had different headlight rims than the late 25 into 26.  There are other differences but these jump out to me when looking at a vehicle for the first time.

@sanderson The 1926 Chevy (series V) was the first Chevy to have a belt driven generator, distributor in the side of the block and the oil pump in the oil pan. All series 'K' vehicles Had a gear driven generator (driven off the cam gear) that also drove the distributor and oil pump off the rear of the generator. The radiator outlet was moved from the driver's side to the bottom passenger side of the radiator. The brake linings also went from 1.5" to 2" wide. I have a late '25 series 'K' that was built in Terrytown on September 23,1925 and is registered as a 1926. It will be 100 years old Tuesday. Back in the early GM days Chevrolet Dealers sign their yearly contracts on or about August 1st every year. After the contract was signed, they were allowed to sell any cars they received after that date as the next model year's cars. That maybe the reason new model year cars are released in late August and September each year. In 1925 Chevy didn't wait for the next year model to improve their cars; they just added them into the production line and then changed the owner's manual. There were 7 different owner's manuals printed in the 1925 calendar year. I hope this helped. Here is my '26 series 'K' sedan. BTW your car was built in Janesville Wi. on or about March 23,1926. It was the 26,712th car built at that plant in the year 1926. (1st car serial # started at 1001)

FYI, there was a great set of articles in the November 2013 G&D magazine that described the differences between the 1925 - 1931 Chevy cars.

The article that dealt with 1925-1926 was written by the late, great Ray Holland, who was the Technical Advisor for those years.

You can read the article in the online version of the magazine here: https://gd.vcca.club/

I believe this resource is only available to VCCA members.

Funny thing Dean..........I have that particular copy of the G & D stored with my other 1925 Chevy  paperwork and had forgotten about Ray's article.   I have the 25 & 26 Sales Data Books, but I thought there was likely enough information provided to Kenneth to identify his year..........Seems like that edition of the G&D wasn't published that long ago.........12 years.........."sigh"........Joe.......
