Inherited Pap's 29 Landau...

New user here, just came across these forums. 

I'm the lucky recipient of a 29 Landau thats been stored in my grandfather's barn since the 50s.  When pap was still (he passed in 2001) he'd take the car into town once a month just to keep it fresh.  Since pap passed my uncle (whos a mechanic and did the upkeep) drove the vehicle 3-4 times a year. 

Unfortunately my uncle passed December 2024 so the car has been sitting since. My father, who is executor of the estate, has the title and is signing it over to me. I've been able to start the engine but the car hasn't moved... yet.

I have a flat bed and 12k lbs winch so I think I'll use that to transport the vehicle back to my farm.  It's only a 25 minute drive so easy transport.

Once I get it home it'll need a good cleaning and I'll start taking notes on what looks good, what's sketchy, and what must be replaced removed link

This is the first resto I've done, so before I start the journey I'd like to hear some best practices from more experienced users.

I'd attach some pics but the forums limiting me for now.

 

Appreciate any advice you may have.

Welcome! You've come to the right place. We'd love to see your car. Four more approved posts will unlock site permissions for you. Congratulations on getting your family car! It sounds like you are on the right track it is amazing how much attention an untouched original or survivor vehicle gets at car gatherings.

Love it! Welcome to the VCCA forums!

My 1928 truck was sitting for over 40 years when I got it. I suggest getting it safe mechanically and drive it around for a while just as it is before taking the plunge into a restoration. You'll get a feel for the car and when you take it to car shows, you'd be surprised at how much attention your survivor will get. 😉

@rustoholic All good advice.  I'm trailering the car the 25 minutes to my farm as I don't know what state the mechanicals are in.  The engine does start easy enough, but that only gets you moving... stopping is the other half of the equation and I haven't tested that yet.

The cool thing is I can drive it around the farm and get a feel for it.  Aside from getting fluids, mechanicals, and probably something with the seats; I'm going to enjoy it for a bit and let it sink in for what I really want to do.

@rustoholic In that thread there are a lot of components that need 600W oil.  How much would you estimate the vehicle will need if I drain and fill all fluids?  

5 gallons of Mobil 600W is close to $200 on Amazon, I didn't see any local stores that have it.  Is there a generic name that is the same and local stores may have?  I'm in the country so Rural King or Tractor Supply are the only options 🙂

In the description of the oil at the Filling Station, it says that 3-4 quarts will fill the transmission, u-joint, and differential of a car or one ton truck.

Although real Mobil 600W is pricey, in the 5 gallon bucket it is around $10 per quart. The price of the Filling Station's oil is $15 per quart. 

I bought a 5 gallon bucket of Mobil 600W from a local oil distributor (Western States Oil) and it lasted me for many years.

BTW, the steering box should not be filled with regular grease, even though it might have a grease fitting on it. I use a mixture of John Deere Corn Head grease (available at Tractor Supply) and 600W in mine. Roughly 2/3 Corn grease to 1/3 600W. The Corn grease is a self leveling grease, unlike other greases that get pushed by the gears away from the gear teeth and do not flow back to provide lubrication. Also, the mixture that I use is thick enough to not leak out of the steering box, which is a nice feature. My steering box has never been rebuilt and I'm sure the clearances around the output shaft are way larger than what the spec calls for.

Thats a lot of info to take in. I got 4 quarts so I should be covered foe the most part. 

I think we'll go get the car this weekend after the hays in. Gonna be a busy Saturday!

I use JD Corn Head grease with Lucas Oil Stabilizer in steering boxes. The Lucas is very viscous but flows very well. The CH grease flows but not enough for a steering box. Also Google tells me the modern equivalent to 600w gear lube would be SAE 250 gear oil. I don't know if Google is full of processed tacos or not but that's what it says. On-line the SAE 250 is about the same price though so, since 600w is available, I would go with that.
