I have a 54 235 with PG. what do you guys find the timing that works best. I’ve read 1before to 4 after.

I imagine that is in the manual. Me personally, I haven't taken my timing light out of the tool box in years. I set to fastest, smoothest idle and lock it down. On the very rare occurrence of ping under load (I don't remember that last time I had to re-adjust), I can retard if necessary (again by ear).

As of the last few years, I've been using the vacuum method. Connect your gauge to some manifold vacuum port that doesn't interrupt the timing advance vacuum. Rev it to about 2000 rpm. Adjust your distributor for your highest vacuum reading then lock it down. Compare that to Tony's method and whichever outcome you like the best, run with it. Either way, the more you play with it, the better you get.

And if you haven't gone through and adjusted your valves recently... do that first. Reference back to "The more you do, the better you get".
