Between other projects, I've been working on my 56. I did drop the tank and found what appears to be some kind of plastic wrapper about 2" square which I'm sure would get wrapped around the intake filter. So, that issue solved I hope, but still not running right. When I rebuilt the carb, I put on a new gasket to the manifold that looked just like the original. However, I have since discovered that it can't be the correct one. There are two holes, about 1/4" in dia. in the manifold that neither the carb or the gasket cover up and is exposed to the outside. I don't have a numbers book, but something is definitely wrong. The carb is a Carter WCFB #2505s and the intake is #3887109 with GM N02 and 56 below it. Can someone tell me if either of these are correct?
Thanks
Ken
@bowtiefan Ken, Here is what I found. Your Carburetor is correct for 1957 Chevy with V8 and four Barrel except with Turbo Glide Transmission. This came from the 1958 Master Parts Catalog. A Carter bulletin from February 1956 says that carb #2286S was used on 1955 and 1956 Chevy V8 cars. Also listed as used on 1956 only, was 2366S. This number was listed for 1956 passenger in the 1958 Master Parts Catalog and in a Chevrolet By The Numbers book that covers 1955-1959 models.
I was unable to find your manifold casting number in the I.D. section of the 1958 Master Parts Catalog or the Numbers book.
Have you identified your engine to be sure it is a 1956?

3887109 shows up as 1966 327 automatic choke thermostat assembly in the later parts books.
However, 3837109 is the manifold for 1956 V8 4-barrel carb based on multiple ebay listings. I haven't seen it in a parts book yet, but I'll keep looking.
I can't see the casting number, but this is the stamp on the engine pad. 013000IT56FB. I can see old red paint on the pad, so I'm pretty sure it is a 56 block because only the 56 engines were painted red. FB = four barrel? So maybe the carb is wrong? I'm beginning to think it might be easier just to put a new Edelbrock on it.

T56FB
T = Tonawanda
56 = 1956 model
FB = 205 HP, w/ Powerglide, w/4 bbl carburetor
Is this similar to your manifold?
Yes, that's what mine looks like. The two 1/4" holes is what got me started thinking something wasn't right because the carb and gasket don't line up or cover them.
Can you post a picture of your 2505S carb base and the gasket? I think those holes should line up with the depressions in the carb base and the cutouts in the gasket that are sort of "C" shaped? Here is a picture that I found and circled those in blue.
EDIT: I see that you said the carb base does not cover them. Maybe it's the wrong base?? Picture might help, especially if there are any Carter part numbers on it.

Since it appeared that I have the wrong carb, I thought I would check online and see what I could find. I looked for the 2366s and the only ones I could find were not complete and would need to be rebuilt, something I really wasn't looking for. One place I called didn't have any in stock, so I asked about the 2286s. He said the 2286 was a 2bbl and the 2366 was for a 2x4 set up and that the 2505s, which I have, is shown as the correct carb for the 56. I couldn't get a hold of Edelbrock after on hold for over 1/2 hr twice, so I called a local large speed shop. They couldn't come up with a direct fit Edelbrock. I went back to my shop and took the carb off again. The bottom looks just like your picture, but the gasket doesn't. I kept looking and found a gasket that has the holes so I put that on to try. I discovered that the gasket that was on the car when I got it, and the identical one I had put on partly covered up the holes in the manifold but not completely so there was an air gap between the carb and the manifold. I'll see how that works, and now, thanks to you fellows, I at least know what it is supposed to have.
Thanks a lot
Ken
