I took the 32 out recently and had quite a bit of clashing going in 3rd gear.  1st and 2nd gear are smooth.  This was after doing a lot of winter maintenance that included replacing gaskets on the u-joint to stop a slight leak, the cork gaskets were well past there use date.  Replaced the transmission oil with 600w oil, filled up to the fill hole.

Is there anything to check or look for other than the oil fill level which I reached today?  Just not sure why 3rd is giving me such problems after the maintenance shifting at slower speeds or higher speeds.

I am by no means an expert on shifting gears in my 31.  I should make my site name to "gear grinder".  I did have difficulty shifting without clashing when I was shifting as if I had a synchronized transmission.  What I did to reduce the clashing was to double shift and experiment shifting at different speeds and engine RPM's.  Also, the shifting became easier when the trans oil got warmed up.  I hope your trouble is not deeper than that.

Hello Part16john,

Google says Chevy started using synchro-mesh transmissions in 1932. My 2004 Jeep Wranglers transmission has a temperamental second gear ( grinds or missed shifts ). So, to lesson the problem, I double clutch the shifting even though it's a synchro tranny. It helps. Also, it keeps me in practice double clutching and not speed shifting. Does your shifter engage 1st, 2nd, and 3rd easily when stationary on the ground/not moving/engine off? If you lift the rear wheels off the ground on jack stands and run the engine, does your shifter engage 1st, 2nd, and 3rd easily? If not, look at the 1932 Chevy repair manuals transmission section for possible guidance and description. Not sure what may be the issue internally ( worn gear teeth, synchro, shifter ). If it's not a long time chronic issue, it's hard to tell what may have happened.
