Looking at possibly purchasing a restored vehicle as in the heading. It looks really nice. Looks like a correct restoration. Located in Texas, was sold at the Mecum 2019 Houston auction. Owner has it listed on Facebook Marketplace. He says he bought it on a whim a year ago, and he is 6'5"....he has a hell of a time getting in and out of the car. Anyhow.........It has a downdraft carburetor. Is this correct ? Also, any pitfalls, quirks, etc. and any other info I need to know about this year /model ? I have never owned a Chevrolet in the 1930's before....always 1940's and 1950's cars. Thanks in advance. Looking forward to any and all advise/comments. Clement
I am not aware of the car sold in the 2019 Houston auction. The original carburetor was an Carter updraft. Where are you located? I am in the Houston area and have owned at least one 1931 Chevrolet since 1969. Currently have too many but just bought one a week or so ago.

I'm in Columbus, OH. So it sounds like the engine is not original if it has a downdraft carburetor ??? Or could someone have changed the manifolds to accommodate a downdraft ???
A 1932 or 1933 manifold will bolt up to a 1931 head.
The engine block casting number is located between the fuel pump and distributor on the passenger side of the engine. If you take a photo or put the numbers found we can identify the engine. The cylinder head also has a casting number but it is under the valve cover.

Hi, Chip. I bet that is what happened somewhere along the line.....a previous owner used a '32 or '33 manifold. This car is 1,200 miles away from me. I would get a private inspection done ( and make sure they take a picture of the engine block number ) if I decide to purchase it. Thanks for the help !
Hi Clement! If you end up getting the car, I'll bet it won't get the attention your 47 Woody did. Dick

Hi, Dick ! I bet you are right. But, there are hardly any stock early 30's around here . It would stand out also. Thanks. Clement
@clement-thurn I had a 1932 Chev with a 1931 block and head that had been changed before I bought it. It still had the original (downdraft) 1932 intake manifold and carb. I owned it for about 19 years and ran fine throughout.
Nice !! Thank you for sharing that.
