@tiny

Just signed in to Hemmings and I'm not seeing it yet this evening.

Maybe tomorrow.

They said it would be visible to everyone starting today. I signed out and tried to find it this morning and was unable to find it. I sent them an email asking for clarification. Edit: I just looked at my "seller dashboard" and it's telling me that there's 7 days 10 hours left in the auction. The auction is supposed to be visible to everyone for 7 days. My assumption is the visible to everyone time will start after that 10 hours is up, at 4:30PM central time today. If that changes when they respond to my email I'll advise.

I can see the auction and pictures from your Hemmings link. That is a nice car.

Wow!

Thanks for the link.

If it weren't for the low value Canadian dollar and another illogical move by our leaders...

I would 100% for sure be bidding!

Love the car, want to see it preserved in it's present form, and would be bidding extra for it's provenance.

Hope all goes well and the car goes to a good place.

Thanks for the link Tiny.  I was impressed in the Hemmings values of the 38 coups.  That makes me a little  more comfortable with all the money that I have spent on my Cabriolet.  I think I will join Hemming to get the valuation for mine.

@tiny Just an FYI but in one place it states body-off restoration and in another says body on. Might be good to correct it .

It sold. It'll continue life in New Jersey with a collector there. I didn't get as much as I wanted but I got "enough". I'm unusually sad over the car leaving. It's just a car but it's been in my life in some form for almost 60 years. Sigh, life goes on.

Hi, Tiny. Glad it sold. I think most of us collectors have some regret or sadness when we sell a car we really like or are attached to. But, you are correct, life does go on. We have to continue and perhaps find another car to make us happy. Life's short...do what you like and enjoy it. Have a great day !

I thought the car was worth more as well.  At least it appears to be going to someone that will keep it as is.  Nothing against restomods or street rods, but these classics are getting to be far fewer in surviving numbers.

My day is coming as well when the GMC has to leave.  Tiny, how was the transaction with Hemmings?  Any advice?

My day is coming as well when the GMC has to leave.  Tiny, how was the transaction with Hemmings?  Any advice?

Overall it went well. It's far more wallet friendly ($100 to list) than any of the main auction houses. Hemmings requires lots of specific photos and videos plus proof you actually own and possess the car (picture of the valid title and photos taken that day of the vehicle). They say they also use "third party verification" that you own and possess the car, what that entails is above my pay grade.

Once you submit everything they ask for, along with your desired reserve, they have an expert review the listing and give you their recommended reserve. You have the option to accept their figure as the reserve or not BUT if you don't, it doesn't go to auction, it goes straight to Make Offer instead. Their recommended reserve was only $500 less than my desired so I went with their figure. I guess that's their way of keeping someone from putting an unreasonable reserve on a car, wasting everyone's time. Hemmings then writes up the listing and submits it to the seller for approval. Once approved, they put it up for Hemmings subscribers to view for a couple of days before it goes public to everyone.

I discovered that, in my auction at least, the most interested folks waited until the auction ends and it enters the Make Offer phase. I had a bottom number in mind so when the first offer that met that figure popped up, I took it. A fellow later said he was going to offer a couple grand more but was away from his computer when it ended. I guess my advise is, don't get in a hurry to accept an offer. Offers are good for two days. Wait at least a day before accepting one in case a higher offer comes through.

Hemmings also offers a service where the buyer pays Hemmings and the seller signs the title over to Hemmings. When Hemmings has both money and title in hand, they pass them on, money to seller, title to buyer. They charge $300 for that service but it's worth the peace of mind. I thought at first that they pre-approve the bidders but they don't so having the option helps both buyer and seller. I guess I'd give them a 4 out of 5. If they pre-approved the bidders it would easily be a 5.

Thank you for the report.

I am curious about the shipping experience too.  Did/does the buyer have to arrange that themselves?  How is/was that handled?

The buyer arranges shipping. The 38 should leave next week or the week after.

If what some of our neighbors have said is true, watching their machinery  leave the day of an auction sale was by far the hardest part of quitting farming.

Just know that I will be thinking of you on that day.

All my best to you.
