Substitute Voltage Regulators

I have a '38 Master Deluxe, still 6 volts. Wanting to verify the correct Voltage Regulator after all of the substitutions.

I have a Standard VR-1 part in there now with a new battery. Everything seems to work - but I don't notice the Ammeter showing charging much.

Before, the Ammeter would show full right deflection most of the time - probably led to the early demise of the battery.

Any other confirmed cross references for the proper 6V regulator?

@michael-tobin Michael, My 1949 Chevy parts catalog says the Chevy part number is 1118309. I entered that number and the word regulator in an eBay search. NOS and NORS regulators show up with prices from $13.00 to $150.00. There could be other numbers that were superseded between 1938 and 1949. My 1949 catalog was the closest one at hand. I hope this helps.

The 1929-1959 parts book shows the same number.

Instructions out of a 309 box. Your 38 probably had a 4 terminal originally but has been converted to 3, I am making that presumption. The polarizing instructions at the bottom may be helpful.

Received a NOS 1118309 VR

Connected it up.Ammeter shows charging voltage at BAT 7.25V.

Just need to use the correct parts.

Can’t always trust the superseded parts on 85+ year old cars, I guess 😀
