I’m looking for a mechanical water temp sending unit and gauge for my 1929 international coach. The car has an electric gauge but the engine i found has a mechanical gauge with a capillary tube. I want to install a new mechanical gauge with sending unit. Any suggestions for what fits? I can mount the gauge under the dash.

Also, what is the normal running temp for the 1929 194. There is no thermostat so what temp does a typical engine run at? I’m assuming 180.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Billy Possum shows them but they are in short supply, it looks like you need to call. http://www.billypossum.com/Catalog/Catalog.php

@david-dunton so I found my original sending unit. It was in a box of stuff that came with the car. I was sure I checked there before but there was a lot of little parts in a box I must have missed. Anyway I tested it and it seems to work. I cleaned it up and when applying heat to the threads the resistance from the threads to the terminal at the top goes down. IDK if it’s accurate but it may give me a baseline to work with.

Then I decided to test the gauge. I figure if I grounded the wire that goes from the gauge to the sending unit it would peg hot. When nothing happened I checked the buss fuse on the back of the light switch and it was burned out. I did have some issues with the light switch when I rewired the car, but that is resolved. I replaced the fuse and all the lights work. I was afraid to test the gauge again as I don’t have anymore fuses here at the house.

One concerned the seat of this temp sender. Looks a bit rough. Im not sure it will seal properly. See the pics attached.

Glad you found it. I would give it a try but give the old forum a search I remember a thread about this system and how to test it. Maybe it was in the manual?

So the sending unit works and the gauge responds to grounding the wire to the engine. It was at Lowest. When I grounded the wire it went to 3/4. When breaking the ground it went to about 1/2. I pounded the dash and it went to about 1/4. So I think the sender works and the gauge works but it’s sticky. Any suggestions on how to free it? Taking the dash apart again is more painful than a root canal.

Is there a way to lube the gauge in the dash or is that a dumb idea? I was hoping possibly the repeated movement (grounding a breaking ground) might free it eventually but not so far.

Thoughts?

@stovebolt-6 I'm pretty sure there is nothing you can lube that will help.
