A future project, as the current springs are basically flat. First decision is re-arch the old springs or buy new from The Filling Station. Or research other companies.

The question is removing and installing the shackle pins. TFS says a porta power press is needed. Getting down to simpler tools is there anything similar to a ‘C’ clamp that’s available for pressing pins in and out? And will freezing the new pins make installation easier?

Just gathering info before spending the $2500 for new parts.

I generally use an pneumatic impact hammer with a tool that has a center that fits into the hole in the end of the pin and has a wider portion to push the pin out. Occasionally need to warm the part holding the pin to get it to move. Once moving you can "walk it out". Same tool can be used to install new pins.

As for your springs. If you have a spring & axle company in your area that works with big trucks, they can inspect and advise you on whether yours can be re-arched or not. I took my 53 to Atlas Spring & Axle in Wichita to be re-arched. It took them about an hour with several adjustments to get it just right and their price was very reasonable.

I used the new pins and a combination of bolts and a tube spacer to remove the old pin while pushing in the new one.   With an impact hammer it worked great.
