Hello

New to the antique Chevy world. I have a 1930 Chevy Coupe all original. Brake pedal was sticking so stared to do some investigating. When I took off the front drivers side wheel the outer ball bearings came out in my hand. (see attached picture) The inner bearings seemed fine. I plan on replacing both.

  1. Where can i get replacement bearings?
  2. Are these pressed into the drum?
  3. Is the flex cable a mechanical brake line?
    1. I thought at first it was hydraulic but have I believe I am wrong

Looking forward to getting the old girl back on the road.

Thanks

Bob Fields

Someone with the proper books will have to verify but I believe they are the same as my 38. I don't remember the original New Departure part numbers but they crossed to National B-01 and B-02. Both are available through Amazon and possibly your local parts store.

Hi Bob

Yes, the bearing cups are pressed into the hub, and there is a seal also pressed in after the inner cup is in place.

The cones should be a snug slip fit on the spindle.

The balls are supposed to be held as an assembly in a sheet metal separator (which is separate from the cups and cones).

If your cups and cones are alright, you probably only need the inner and outer ball and separator assemblies (and a seal).

Tiny is correct, yours will be the same as the bearings in his '38.

The original New Departure numbers were 909701 and 909702.

From there, follow what Tiny says!

Hi Bob and welcome.  I recommend that before proceeding much further, you get on the Filling Station's website www.fillingstation.com and order both the owner's manual and the repair manual for your car.  Both are reprints of original Chevy manuals and contain a wealth of information about the car and specifically about the area you're working on.

You should also consider joining the VCCA -- the club which supports this forum -- we have a Technical  Advisor who is an expert on your particular car and who can answer questions, point you to parts sources, etc.

Have fun with your car, and again, welcome!

All the Best, Chip

@ole-olson Thanks for the information. The spindles and cones look really good. Lots of grease on the assembly. The outer bearing separator is broken which allowed the ball bearing to fall out. Part of the separator is still in the hub. I will need to press it out of the hub as well as the inner bearing assembly.

Question is the seal on the outer portion of the spindle or inner potion?

Disregard the seal question I see you mentioned....seal also pressed in after the inner cup is in place.

@w-l-chip-boyd thanks I have the repair manual and will order the owners manual as well. Yes I have purchased parts from the Filling Station. I talked with a Steve  from their on my carb issue and he was very helpful.

I did join the VCCA for the next three years and looking for a local club in the Chicago area during the summer and a club in Florida near Port Saint Lucie in the winter months.

Manual

Thanks again for the help.

Any sites that might have videos uploaded on working on old Chevy's?

I'm kind of a visual guy

At the top of the page, right side of the blue bar you'll see a button that says Rosters with a down arrow. Click that, then click Regions/Chapters. From there you can search for local Regions and Chapters in any area of the country you wish.

The flex cable is in fact a cable. I'd suggest replacing both sides for safety. They are available from the Filling Station.

The New Departure ball bearings were also sold by GM under the Delco brand. They eventually stopped selling the individual cone, separator , and race and went to complete sets. The outer is 909001 and the inner was 909002. All the bearing companies, like BCA mentioned above, had a replacement.  I like using the NDH/Delco and use Locate Bearing as a supplier but there are many others.

The cable you showed is the mechanical brake cable, if it is free and not frayed just lube it and it should work OK.

@ed-osier thanks that was my plan to take a look before replacing them. A quick inspection they seem to look in good shape.
