1928/1929 Cabriolet Wood

Does anyone know if the wood for the 28 Cabriolet will work in a 29 Cabriolet? The drawings look similar and they are both 107 inch wheelbase. It looks like all the part numbers, for just about everything, changed when they went to the six cylinder catalog so comparing those doesn't help.

Thanks

Dave

Hi Dave

From what I can tell, you can directly compare part numbers between 1928 and 1929 parts catalogs.

Most (nearly all probably) parts were not carried over "unchanged" and "directly interchangeable" from their 1928 form into the 1929 models and so part numbers changed.

When parts were carried over unchanged (for example the front axle I-beam) the part number did remain unchanged.

However, I'm not seeing any part numbers attached to any of the parts of the wood body frame in the catalogs I'm looking at, and I'm wondering if Chevrolet even supplied replacements, or if maybe body shops were just expected to reproduce their own.

If you have a source for those numbers, and they are not the same from one year to the next, I would think they are not interchangeable.

As always of course, I may be wrong.  🙂

If so, I hope someone corrects me.

Thanks Ole. I will attached the two books I am using. In the back are the Fisher Body sections that have the wood parts broken down by part number. Some books for some reason do not have the body info, not sure why.

@david-dunton

Thanks!

I found them on https://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/index.htm.

I still probably wouldn't have noticed the wood part numbers if you hadn't said to go right to the back.  🙂

That source shows only a few wood parts for the 1928.

One that is shown, and is also in the 1929 catalog is the "front body hinge pillar".

As you pointed out, it doesn't look to be the same number for 1928 (all except convertible) and the 1929 cabriolet (job number 8890).

To my eye it appears that the outer contours of the '28 and '29 are slightly different in the area of the belt line, and probably others as well, which I assume would mean the wood is probably slightly different as well.

Another book that might be useful is this one on ebay: How to Repair Fisher Bodies 1926-1930

Thanks Ole and Dean. I went through my two books. The 1932 (1929-1932) book has all wood part numbers seven digit 4XXXXXX and the 1930 four cylinder book they are all six digit 3XXXXX.

Thanks again

Dave
