Have finally assembled the rearend and it is back under the car. It is very quiet and rolls nicely. Snow on the ground now so will wait till spring to take it for a longer drive have only driven it in the yard. Thanks to the Chevy forum for all your help. Mike

Can the rear end housings be mismatched or do they have to stay a set? My 22 490 has a crack in left side.Looking for a replacement in case it can't be repaired. Thanks Dave

@david-lee-shepherd Not sure. But I don't think they have to be a match. You are more likely to find both housings which match then just the left side. Good luck with the repairs. Hopefully you can make it work.

I would recommend trying to keep each side paired together and having the crack repaired is possible. There is no assurance that the axles bores are not concentric for the axles and parts for these are hard enough to find. FYI - the late 490 housing should be the same up to 1923. 1924 is different.

Unfortunately the pinion gear is missing in both but I think I know someone who has 2 of those housings. I believe they are slated to go to the scrap hauler soon.
