Happy New Year every one.

I joined a bit ago when I picked up this car..sorry..no pics yet..coming.

I stored it until I finished my new garage(done...and heated), finally got the car rolled in and trying to figure out what I ended up with.

Backstory..Im a plumber..was in a customers house..he said he had a faucet or something in his big old garage I needed to get. He's 92

Went in garage..in back a pre war Chevy he had started rebuilding years ago

Complete with spare parts

He told me to take it if I wanted..he needed it out of garage..Searched 2 floors for all the stashed parts..loaded it and am now starting to unravel the history.

I have a 68 Vette, all original and untouched, a '72 Cuda in process and a 74 Ghia..so im a bit out of my league here.

I was fairly sure I had a 27 Capitol Aa with possibly a 28 4 cyl.(common to swap them I hear)

Started cleaning out and noticed some things I need help with

Engine:

4 cyl, single port exhaust, carter carb, Stewart Vacuum tank

Top of head: Bowtie and under it 346886

Side of block: K 226 then under that 346709 under that Bowtie then under that a shamrock with PSC

Block pad passenger side stamped 28 92695

Bell housing  346410

Car tag still nailed to seat frame passenger side: Model Capitol, Car Number 2AA 1917

Tranny: 590 (8, 3 or 0..can't tell)21, Bowtie and 4, Then also stamped...B 1 2 8?

Fisher body tag: Job #7210, Body T 10

Any help is appreciated.  I'll start searching some forums and past articles.  I have no idea how to start or drive it.

Maybe just the basics on where to begin.

All help and responses are greatly appreciated

From forums regarding my Vette...I know many will want pictures.  Patience for now...Android phone, apple computer.  Might need a Gen Z'er to help..lol

Best to all and Thank you

Jimmy K

Hi Jimmy (@jimmys27aa),

Sounds like a wonderful project!

Here's some info for you:

  • The first character on the Car Number plate (2) means the car was made at the Tarrytown, NY plant.
  • The second and third characters on the number plate (AA) is the model of the car (1927).
  • The last string of numbers on the number plate (1917) means that this car was the 916th vehicle off that assembly line for that year. The first car of the year would start off with the number 1001 and then the following vehicles increase that number all through the year.
  • The raised characters (K 22 6) on the block is the casting date: November (A=Jan, B=Feb, etc), 22 (22), 1926 (6).
  • The number stamped on the flat boss towards the rear of the block (28 92695) means that this block was the 2,892,695th 4-cylinder block produced by Chevrolet.

So, the vehicle model is a 1927, but the engine block was cast in 1926. This probably means that the car is a very 'early' 1927 model (the new models were announced and started being sold in August of any year in that era) and since the engine was produced in November '26, the car was assembled in late 1926.

Another possibility is that the original 1927 engine died at some point and the owner at that time found a good, used 1926 engine for a replacement. I'm speculating.

Cheers, Dean

@jimmys27aa Jimmy,  Welcome aboard. I'm not a "4 cylinder guy" so I will not be much help to you but we're glad you are here. I'll bet there is a VCCA member not too far from your who would be glad to help you sort out your new project. Thanks for saving it. Dean is a good source for info. Others will chime in soon.

Mike

I tried to compile engine block casting (not stamped serial) numbers on web site home.znet.com/c1937/Cast.htm.   I show #348709 as a 1927 block.  Double check your casting number cuz the 6 might be an 8.
