Generator test

I was able to rig up a test for my generator. I took it all apart and cleaned it up inside. There was a good deal of gunk on the stator. I cleaned all the contacts and it puts out power when I spin it with an impact gun and the points in the regulator seem to work appropriately. Yes I had a load on it at the time as well. I don't have the kind of test equipment to ensure it is optimal but I was pleased it made some current for a few short bursts.

When I was reinstalling it, I noticed a spark from the generator wire. I usually disconnect the battery when working on the car but I must have forgotten. In some of the research I did it seems the generator cable should be live all the time. The other side is only live when the generator is running and the points are closed. Is this correct? I rewired this car myself so I want to be sure I didn't make a mistake that could cause issues or damage.

The wire going to the generator is live all the time when the battery is connected regardless of the ignition switch position. The wire that comes out of the generator to the regulator is live only when the points are touching. Did I get this wrong?

Thanks
