My 50 chev 216 running rough and accessive black soot at exhaust. Manifold damper ok, recent complete tune up, timing ok, vacuum normal but fluctuating. I think a carb problem. Any ideas?

Hi Richard

Assuming that your car/truck was running fine earlier... and that you have a Rochester B...

My first thought is that you are on the right track regarding a carburetor problem.

Probably an issue with the power circuit like a stuck power piston holding the power valve open, or a loss of the vacuum necessary to pull the valve and piston closed against it's spring.

The fix may be as easy as removing the top of the carburetor and cleaning up the piston, or more difficult due to warpage of carb body parts preventing proper gasket sealing of vacuum passages.

Carbking is the resident expert on this and hopefully he will see this and join in.  🙂

tHE FIRST THING I WOULD DO IS REMOVE THE BOWL COVER AND CHECK IF THE POWER PISTON IS STUCK.
