I have replaced the fuel tank, and there is what seems to be a vent tube from the top of the tank towards the front of the car.
Is this a vent tube? Where does it connect, and to what?
I can't speak directly to the 54 but my 53 is vented by the cap. I'd assume the 54 is as well. Maybe the tank you bought is set up for someone to install fuel injection and it's a return line? I looked at tanksinc.com and their 53/54 tank has a block off plate for those w/o fuel injection. So is yours removable?

After reading your response about the fuel cap being vented and being reminded that some engines need a return, I have decided that the vent tube is not a vent after all. I'll cap it and continue on.
Thank you for your response.
@gman-2 I misspoke. Rather than being vented "by" the gas cap. My 53 is vented "at" the cap. The cap itself isn't vented but the lip of the fill tube that the cap seals against has a shallow groove in it at the 12 o'clock position that serves as a vent. Having said that, it doesn't change the situation at all.
