I am in the process of stripping all of the paint off my car down to bare metal. The after market paint is failing so it all needs to come off. I haven’t painted a vehicle in 20 years or so. The products out there are very different than back in my days of painting. When I painted my truck I stripped to bare metal and then just used etching primer and then a high build primer. I did put sealer on as well but I can’t remember if it was before or after the high build. That paint job is over 20 years old and still looks great.

I believe I used a phosphorus product on the rust but I can’t remember what product. Do you all think a phosphorus product is essential? In my research I have come across many conflicting ideas. I wanted to go epoxy primer, then high build and top coat after blocking with Acrylic Enamel as I think that will give it an original look.

You can’t use epoxy primer over some of the phosphors. Also, we always did any bondo skims over the bare metal but I think you can do that very epoxy primer.

I have been stripping paint and filler for a few days now… Lots of dollying to do to get also the little dimples out of the metal. I hate to have to use any bondo unless I really have to.

Thanks

Rich

IF you are a full VCCA member ( not just chat ) there is loads of info in the G&D written by member Dave Sylvain that covers all the questions you may have. And if not you can contact him  for further advice. He has been writing an article every month for the last 7 years -has his own shop- and does top notch work. Those articles alone are worth the price of membership if you are not currently a member.
