31 Window Installation

I'm looking for advice/information on installation of the lower seal on the door windows on my '31 Sedan.  The original seals were so rotten that they essentially were non-existent.  All I know is that they were installed in the channel on the lower window rail.  I purchased the rubber seal material from the FS.  I think the seal

is supposed to be installed as shown in the photo attached.  However, when I did that, the lip of the seal is angled up so when I slide the window up by hand, the seal seems to be so tight when it encounters the wood frame below the window opening.  So, my question is, am I installing the seal in the correct orientation?  Is the exposed lip of the seal supposed to be angled up?  Is the seal supposed to seal against the wood, or the metal lip on the inside of the window opening?  Sealing against wood seems not to be correct.

Also, in the other photo attached, it shows that there is a gap or opening at the corner of the window that doesn't seem to have any kind of seal.  What keeps water from entering the door through this opening?  I think I can come up with something that will seal it, but maybe someone can give me a suggestion?

Thanks in advance.

Ralph

Hello Ralph C Vemmer,

I could be all wrong, but this is what I'm thinkin'. I believe that the lower seal/weatherstrip is a horizontal piece that extends from the front to the rear, at the bottom, of the window opening on the door. The Filling Station sells it as: 70-64. The description says: '1926-36 Seal, lower side window. Fastens to inner face of door to seal against outer side of glass'. If this is what you have, a breakdown of the description may help. 'Lower' part of door window opening. 'Inner face' of door is still outboard of the door glass, not the inner door panel. The doors outer face metal to the doors inner face metal. As far as proper placement of seal/weatherstrip goes, I think that the lip rides against the glass when glass is raised and if the glass is lowered all the way down, then the lip flattens out and you can rest your arm on the open window without getting a crease in your skin by the lip. So, it seems that the lip should be located near flush with the horizontal flat surface of the metal with the lip facing inboard to ride against the glass. Weatherstrip adhesive or fasteners? I don't know. Please disregard if not applicable.

Edit: Ralph, you might take a look at The Filling Stations part 70-75. It's a bottom channel with seal combo that seals when the window is raised.

Thanks Harry.  I think I have figured it out.  I appreciate your help.

I should have looked at the description of the seal at the Filling Station before I tried to do things on my own.  It clearly states that it is attached to the inside of the door.  I used some silicone sealant and brads and it works fine.

Thanks again.
