I have a 1916 Chevy with no water pump on the engine.  What years of the 490 engine are the same except for the water pump?  I have a chance to buy a 1922 engine.  Will it work in my 1916 Chevrolet and bolt up to the transmission?  Also, I understand the radiator may have different outlets.

Art, I suggest consulting a parts book or more that cover the 490 assembly years. I suspect that several years can be a replacement. Not having personal experience I can't provide better advice.

I checked my four cylinder parts book and it is confusing when you look for the parts for a 1916 490 water pump.

I suggest that you contact the Technical Advisor for your vehicle. Their contact info is listed in every G&D magazine, on the page before the classified ad section.

Cheers, Dean

'16 and '17 490 engines were very similar.  '18 introduced some changes including water pump and gear oil pump in front of the generator.  The '16 & '17 had a plunger type oil pump on the side of the block and thermo syphon cooling (no water pump).  '16 generator, electric lights, connecticut ignition were optional for $60, but became standard in '17.

The '18 T-series trucks used engines from the FA car line, and '19-'22 T-series trucks used engines from the FB car line.  I don't think your '16 is a T-series truck, but instead based on the basic car chassis - I'm guessing.

To your inquiry about swapping a '22 engine into your '16, the basic block was carried from '14 - '28 with various changes and improvements along the way.  I haven't looked at swapping the engines that closely like you're considering.  The key area to look is the engine & trans support brackets and how they attach to the chassis.  There were chassis changes in that mount area between '16 & '20 (not sure exactly when though, in '20 I think).  The other key area is mounting the trans to the cone clutch and flywheel.  I think those are largely unchanged and should bolt up, but don't hold me to it as I haven't done it (yet).

Another area to look at is the brake mechanism attaching to the transmission.  In '16-'21, the service brake shared function with the left clutch pedal - 1/2 down clutch, full down clutch and brake, and the middle pedal was the emergency/parking brake with a ratchet removed link   In '22, the hand brake was introduced along with the mounting accoutrements on the transmission.  Some cars between '16-'21 were modified after release to add the hand brake and avoid the shared clutch pedal arrangement.

Well, I hope this helps.  I can look at some of my cars and engines for more detail if you have specific questions.  Just reach out directly.

Regards, Bill
