Are valve keeper keys hardened or anything or just standard metal? My head when I took it apart had 3 of the regular small rectangle keepers and 5 of the cotter key looking ones with a couple of those broke. I want to use all the little rectangular ones but am too much of a cheap skate to give the parts houses 24 bucks for a set of 8 if I can just widdle out my own out of some steel I have on hand.

Kanter Auto list hardened keys for $8.00 each. I am sure the original keys are hardened.
