I need new tires for my 55’ 3800 but I’m being told from local guys that I should get rid of the split rims (I have 7.5-17s)
I really like the stance, and old school farm truck look with large Chevrolet hub caps.
I hear mixed things on if split rims are safe or unsafe. I’m also hearing going tubeless is the best.
Any recommendations or opinions from the group?
@jgmtrbb97 The term Split Rim is used to describe a plethora of wheel types. Yours are likely not unsafe if they are in good shape. They might be two piece type with a removable endless ring that becomes the outer flange of the assembled wheel. The ring is a bit tricky to remove and care must be taken to prevent bending or distorting the ring during dismounting and remounting. If you have an owners manual for your truck, it should have instructions for what ever wheel you have, if they are original to the truck.
There is another two piece wheel that uses a split ring as the outside flange of the assembled wheel. This ring can be pried out of its groove in the wheel by starting at the split. One side is often notched to provide a starting place for the pry bar.
There is also a 3 piece wheel where the endless ring that is the outer flange of the wheel is driven inboard to provide access to a split lock ring that sets deep in a groove at the edge of the wheel. This lock ring must be removed so that the flange ring can be removed.
It is important that all components, of whatever wheel you have, are in good condition. All of these types require caution when remounting and inflating tires. I always put a chain through a hole in the wheel and around the tire and ring, in at least two places, in case something goes horribly wrong. Make sure the chain is loose enough to allow inflation of the tire. I also check the ring location frequently during inflation and bump it back to a centered position, if necessary. Air the tire up from the back side so the ring is facing away from you.
I always do this work myself. I too like the original look of tall bias ply tires on vintage trucks. I hope I haven't scared you off. Common sense is the key to success

If your wheels aren't too rusty, and as long as you don't have the RH-5 style that splits in the middle (which I doubt you have on a 1 ton) shown in the bottom left corner of the attached illustration, and you heed Mike's advice, you should be fine.

@35mike and Ole … thank you. To me, they look like Kelsey Hayes wk-4 or 4As.
