I have a one year old Optimum Red Top 6 volt battery in my 29 coupe.  I have been making a lot of short trips lately so I figured I would put the charger on to make sure it was fully charged.  The charger is a Schumacher SC-1000A fully automatic 6volt/12volt 10 amp fast charge 3 amp maintainer. After a few hours the charger showed green but I decided to leave it on maintainer. Today about 20 hours later I noticed the charger was still charging, the fan was running and the charger the clamps, wires and the battery were hot.  I checked to see if the ignition key was off and there was no visible drain shown on the ammeter.  I am thinking I need a new charger and maybe the battery is cooked.  Suggestions welcomed.  What is the best 6 volt charger maintainer?

I have a NAPA 90620.  My father has a Schumacher one that looks identical except for the logo and label color.  It is no longer on the NAPA website so I am not sure if it is still made.  Both have worked well.  These only detect the voltage automatically.  I have to select the battery type and the charge rate.  It will detect a battery that is bad and stop charging.  It also switches to trickle reliably when the charge is complete.

I use the " Battery Tender " brand chargers for years. NEVER any problems . They make several different kinds for both 6 volt and 12 volt.

@timothy-kruger Thanks, I am definitely looking to get a new charger tender.  I am wondering if I should have the battery load tested to see if it was damaged by being overcharged.  It is still under warranty, but does seem to start the car ok.

@clement-thurn Thanks, I am checking reviews to see what charger tender to get.  Probably something low amperage, as I don't expect to run the battery down that much.

@bare-feet I am using a Harbor Freight inexpensive maintainer that was converted from 12 volt to 6 volt by a friend. Three years and no problems. From the Harbor Freight site.

"Understanding the differences between a battery charger and a battery maintainer can help you choose the correct tool for your application.

You should use a Battery Maintainer to help keep batteries topped off when they are stored for an extended period. A Battery Maintainer may be used to top off lawn mowers and motorcycle batteries in the winter and show car batteries while in storage. When using a Battery Maintainer, always disconnect the battery from the vehicle or equipment it is intended to power. This will prevent additional current drawn by the vehicle or equipment from straining the Battery Maintainer.

You should use a Battery Charger to charge a dead battery. Certain Battery Chargers have diagnostic features such as battery testing, charging system testing, and battery reconditioning. Certain models may provide a higher current to boost or start an engine."

Well that is strange. Earlier i replied(tried to )  to the thread but after composing the reply and hitting the "add reply" button realized I was not logged in. I then logged in and rewrote my reply which is posted. Now my original post is on line but under the name "'anonymous". I think we have an issue that the webmaster needs to address. The posting times are correct for when composed however the post by "Anonymous" indicates joining 1 second ago. Tiny was questioning someone in another thread regarding posting as "Anonymous" and perhaps the same method (path) was used.

I was talking to Peter about that very thing just a couple of days ago. Neither of us thought that was possible but it obviously is. At least now we know how it's happening. I'll delete your anonymous post. I just did a test and it's possible to post without being logged in. That's not supposed to happen. Another thing for Peter to fix.

@clement-thurn

charger

I just got this one.  The reviews were good.  I hooked it up and within fifteen minutes the battery was topped off.  I am hoping it was not damaged by the cooking it received from my old charger.

I use a 12volt only version of that on my lawnmower over the winter.  Never had any issue.
