What is the proper fluid that should be used within the steering box on a 29 Chevy?

@erik-langhofer-2 Erik, I'm going to split this one too and put it in the proper forum.

Hi Erik

Originally Chev called for a 600W oil, which is quite thick.

Later on Chev switched to calling for "steering gear lubricant", which was a semi-fluid NLGI 00 grease and stays in the steering box better.

NLGI 0 grease does not flow well enough, it needs to be the consistency of an NLGI 00, like this:

https://catalogue-industriel.auto-cam.ca/product/castrol-5098-spheerol-shl-00-semi-synthetic-lubricant-cartridge-0109670-ag359

It may take a little looking, but you should be able to find some.

@erik-langhofer-2 @ole-olson @tiny Erik, Ole, Tiny, I have heard that Corn Head Grease, from the farm supply store, is a suitable lube for steering gears.

I've heard that and have used it. Others say it doesn't flow enough and can cavity out. I put that plus a couple of squeezes of Lucas Oil Treatment with it for additional flowability.

@35mike  @tiny  @erik-langhofer-2

Corn Head Grease is an NLGI 0 and a little too resistant to flowing back to where it needs to be behind a moving sector or ball nut.

If you use it, you should do as Tiny says and add some oil (and mix it with the grease before putting it in the gear).

Cotton Picker Spindle Grease is better as I believe it is an NLGI 00.

I use the Castrol product I linked to because it's affordable, comes in a cartridge, and it has a very good 4 ball wear test rating.
