Hi Tiny, I can't remember again how to start a new post, but I have a question for you.   My 38 is now finished at my restorer, but they just called me and they said that I have no brakes.   I had them put on new brake cylinders, liners and everything that has to do with the brakes.  They says that even the emergency brakes still don't work.  He thinks the brakes shoe linings are too small or the drum is too large.  What is the inside diameter of the drum supposed to be and what should the shoe thickness supposed to be?  He thinks that the reshoed linings might not be the correct ones.  Can you please message me your phone number so I can have him call you.   Thank you!  I was going to bring it home tomorrow after 12 years of being restored.

@john-schildberg I'm not going to be a lot of help John. I sold the car and can't take any measurements. I sent all my documentation with the car. When I did my brakes, I bought new shoes from Kanter and re-used the OE drums. Ask him if the adjusters are all the way out. Huck brakes are a different animal, each wheel takes two adjustments. If the brake adjusters are all the way out and the cylinders are all working, moving the shoes out with the pedal and the shoes are not making contact with the drums it must be either the shoes, drums or a combination. I don't know where to look to get you information on sizes. Hopefully someone does. If he's not familiar with Huck brake adjustment and isn't sure if the adjusters are all the way out let me know and I'll give you my phone. Gut feeling is he doesn't have them adjusted right. The shoes would have to be bare to not reach the drums.

John the brake shoes are the same 36 to 50. If I remember right the drums should be 11 inch, should be changed if the .090 over size I agree with Tiny that they may not have them adjusted correctly. If you still have my number you can have them call me.

@tiny Now that is no excuse.   You should have kept your car. Lol   I didn't know about Huck brakes.  Mike told me that they had the brakes all the way out, but I will ask him if he knows anything about Huck brakes tomorrow.

Huck Adjustment Guide

Excellent graphic. The lever direction shown works for the rear brakes that are adjusted through the backing plate. The front brakes on a 38 are adjusted through the brake drum so the lever direction would be the opposite. They need to think "clockwise" to tighten and "counter clockwise" to loosen.

I'm surprised that a "restorer" would be mystified by drum brakes. It's pretty easy to take a look in there. Just sayin'

My guess is he isn't familiar with Huck brakes and has only adjusted one end of each wheel cylinder. Also the front adjust through the brake drum instead of backing plate. I don't know what all years were that way but 38 was.

I talked with the shop today and the main problem is when the shoes are adjusted to have a pedal then the parking brake will not work. I looked in my parts book and I think I found the correct part and it shows to be for 38 only. I don’t know if the wrong one could be shorter than one for a 38. If the rod that bolts to the rear shoe and pushes on the front one was longer would seem to fix the problem.

@dennis-christianson Thank you Denny for taking the time to talk to Mike.  Do I need to find a part to fix it?

@35mike Thank you Mike, but I don't know right now.   I will be gone to KC for a week so I will be away from my computer.  I will find out when I get back.
