1937 starter what fits?..

Topic starter

What starter fits in a 1937 chevy truck bell house. I picked up a 1937 216 (confirm via block cast number) with a bell house cast number 838533 which I believe is correct for 1937. The starter drive pocket on the bell house is very shallow and none of the Chevy starters I have will seat in the pocket because they are to long ( the drive housing is too long). There is a 37 starter on eBay but the picture showing the drive house looks just as long as the three starters I have.  I’d appreciate any knowledge here as I have never run into this before.  Thanks

I would suggest asking another member to decipher the part number on the bell housing. With the right combination of mix and match off the shelf parts you can interchange all of the components that will bolt to the back of the block between 1937, and 1962. The bell housing bolted to the engine may not work with the flywheel and starting motor combination you have.

What application do you want to use this engine in? Is it a '37, or just as a backup spare?

The 1937 starter is a one year only starter but the 1938 - 54 will work if you change the foot stomp linkage. 1955 - 63 are 12 volt and have different teeth on flywheel. A GMC starter will appear to bolt in but is about an eighth of an inch too long and won't work. It is possible to bolt a later bell housing on a 37 engine. The 1938 and newer bell housings have two bolts in either side to hold the foot stomper pivot.

Your bell housing number checks out as correct for a 1937 truck. The only part of the 1937 starter that is unique to 1937 is the nose casting. All the rest is the same back through 1934. (1934 Standard is different) I have a used starter or if you have an earlier one and just need the nose for a '37, I think I have that also. Harry,

I checked and I have a NOS starter end housing for 1937. Let me know if I can help.

Mile, Lou, Arthur,

Thanks for the info

I picked up a 37 starter cheap and it fits and after rebuild is working fine.

Its a 739A for anyone's future reference to this thread.

Thanks again for the support

Harry
