- Does anyone know will rebuilding the steering box fix the extra play in the steering? Hard or easy or just buy one rebuilt?
If properly rebuilt and adjusted yes it will-provided that is the only issue with the front end. Chances of that being the case in my opinion are close to zero.

Bruce,
The first place to look for excess play in the steering would be in the "third arm". It is the pivot point between the steering box and the tie rods. Any slop in the third arm bearing will be magnified by a factor of 10 in the steering. Ask me how I know.
I replaced the stock 3rd arm with the Corvette arm which has bearings instead of bushings. This took all of the play out of the arm but I still have some in the steering gear. I, too, would like to rebuild the box but I have read that if the internals are worn it won't help. I am considering getting a new unit but they are pricey.

use of a 53-62 corvette 3rd arm is the way to go. Mike McCagh
