Guys,
I bought the push rod cover gasket from the filling station for my 29. When I removed the cover, it did not have any gasket material around the plugs.
The new gasket came with the cork rings. I am a little confused as to how they are to be used, if at all. My 53 has the same set up but I believe the cork gaskets fit round the extrusions in the spark plug perforations on the side cover. These rings will slide right through the holes in the cover. They don’t contact the block so if I put them in the holes I’m afraid they will fall inside the cover at some point.
I know this is where air enters the crankcase but it seems I need something around the spark plug holes to keep dirt and debris from getting in but I’m not sure these cork rings are the right solution.
Do I use them? If yes how are they secured?
Thanks
Rich
Hi Rich
The cork rings are for a later side cover and are not used on yours.
Later covers had a sort of "tunnel" stamped into them that extended the cover in to the head around each spark plug to close up that area and that is where the cork ring went.
Those covers were used on engines with vent slots in the rocker arm covers.
I don't recall exactly when that change was made, but my '29 has the same cover as yours.
Hope that helps.

@ole-olson Thank you for that Ole. I'm not familiar with the earlier engines. I'll delete my post to prevent confusion.

Thanks Ole, So nothing goes in those big holes? I thought they might have some kind of breather material but I guess not.
This engine had slots cut in the valve cover as well but I closed those up. It was apparently a popular idea. The 4 engines I have from 29 to 31 all have holes hacked in the valve covers. This engine has the air filter tube that goes ot the oil fill as well.
My 53 has the other kind of cover. I closed up the vents in the valve cover and added a breather on that engine as it seemed neater and My thought was dirt wont get in there. I did a lot driving on dirt roads.
I know the color is not right on the covers shown. I may correct that when I paint the car in the next year or 2. I do like the color though.
Right.
Nothing goes there.
I've too have often thought it would be nice if I could find felt tubing or something I could cut and put between the head and cover to keep the dust out but let the air in.
