Help with transmission leak.

I put the engine and transmission back in my 29 after adjusting the shims/gaskets for the ball tube retainer. I added about 6 ounces of the 600w oil and then filled the trans as required. I was gone yesterday so it sat for 24 hours unmolested.

Today I have the Valdez oil spill under the tranny. I cleaned off everything and will recheck to try to find what is leaking. The oil is only on the bottom of the housing for the U-joint. If I understand the manual correctly that housing bolts onto the back of the trans and the bolts are behind the U-joint. I suspect that gasket must need to be replaced. That would mean pulling the U-joint to get to those bolts, pulling the housing and installing a new gasket.

1)  The manual says the U-Joint is driven or pressed back on the output shaft and cautions about driving the bearing into the trans. Then I need a special tool to help bolt the U-joint back together. Can anybody elaborate or offer guidance?

2)  Is there anyway to drop the torque tube and do this in the car? I really don't want to pull the engine again as getting the bell housing in between the frame crosspiece and the bottom edge of the firewall is a bitch.

Again, I appreciate all help.

Reassembling the U-joint can be a challenge. There is a special tool and I have one but never used it. Seems I don't find it before I find another method. Over the years I have used an old hacksaw blade, string, pieces of wire, long zip tie to put the two halves of the U-joint together. The hardest part is to align the parts so the studs will go into the holes in the other half. Once you get a nut on one stud (don't tighten yet) then rotating the U-joint and coaxing the other parts in position so another stud can have a nut started you have it going your way. If you have fat fingers or large hands get a kid to help. Small hands and fingers helps in the confined space.
