I am looking to buy one of the 3 legged tools to collapse the split rims on a 29 Chevy. Many people that are selling have no idea what size their tool is. There are 3 arms, 2 moveable and one fixed that expands. How long are the moveable arms supposed to be? I am looking at a tool and those two arms are 17" long.
Any ideas?
Thanks.
As long as the three arms can extend beyond the size of the rim the tool should work. 1929 Chevy rims are 20". Earlier rims can be as much as 25" so a tool that also works for them would be a wise purchase. I am not aware of a three armed tool that will not work on the '29 rims. It is important to know how to position the tool so the rims are not bent and rendered scrap. There are plenty of sources online that can be searched and understood prior to using a tool.

Hello 29Red4,
I do not have split rims, so no tool to measure for you. You might check out a couple of split rim informational pieces online: Youtube-'1929 Buick tyre (tire) change-split rim' by James Webb. The other is the old VCCA Chat- 'Changing tires on 29 Chevy split rim wheels' 12/18/17 09:39pm #400055. It appears that if you pull/draw-in/collapse the split rim too much, it might buckle and bend the rim and ruin it.
I have done the research and watched videos and understand how the rims work. I just want to be sure the tool that works for model T's and A's will also work on our smaller rims. I am buying one from eBay and we will see.
Thanks for the help.
