Hi, I’m new here. I just bought a 1929 Chevy 2 door sedan. I am beginning a quick refurbishment (not frame off). I am trying to remove the interior. How do the door  handles and window cranks come off? I tried to see if there was a clip on the back but there is little to no clearance behind the handles.

I did a frame off restoration of my 1953 Chevy 3600 but this 1929 is a mystery to me so far.

Thanks

Rich

Hi Rich

Welcome!  🙂

It's been a long time since I worked on my '29, but I THINK there is a retainer (sort of a shaped piece of wire) on the back side of the handle that you should be able to get at by carefully prying the escutcheon plate one way or the other.

I THINK you need to push the escutcheon plate as deep as possible into the upholstery fabric while holding the handle toward the center of the car.

There is an online 1929-31 Fisher Body Manual that you can peruse here:

Hope that helps.

I've not chimed in because I don't know if the 29 uses the horseshoe shaped clip or not. If it does you'll need a specific tool to remove them. The two types of tool that I'm familiar with are a plyer type and a push in type.  <The Clip Looks Like This>  <The Push In Tool Looks Like This> <The Plyer Type Looks Like This>  Chevy used at least two different sizes of clip over the years. The universal push-in type above will work with some but not with others without modifying the tool a bit. I've used the plyer type for decades. It can be problematic if the clip turns and gets stuck in the handle but it works with all sizes of clips. If the clip turns and gets stuck it often requires brute force to get the handle off, bending the clip. You can sometimes re-bend the clip to shape but new clips are available. If you don't get the shape right when re-bending it, it can create problems ever getting it off again, requiring brute force again. I just put a new clip on rather  than take a chance. Unfortunately I don't have photos of a handle with the clip on it. <This video shows how to use the push-in type of tool> Ignore the part about pushing the clip back in with the handle in place. That's retarded. Just insert the clip into the handle then push it back onto the stud in the door until it clicks into place. <About two minutes into this video shows how the clip works and is mounted in the handle.> This guy uses his own way of removing the clip. I can't say it's any better or worse than the tools above. Search as I may I've not been able to find a video on how to use the plyer tool. The best way I can try to explain it is to use it to grab the ears of the clip from the end of the handle away from the knob and twist the clip out of the handle. I realize that makes no sense until you see it done, then it makes sense. Edit: This video doesn't show the plyers but it shows the push in tool quite well. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/to8GEGYn6Ic

Thanks a million to both of you. Thin is very helpful. I thought it might be a clip but my upholstery is stuck to the back of the handles and i didnt want to do too much damage taking these off. I am going ot make new panels for the doors and trim. The headliner is in good shape. I dont want OT mess with that. The seats just need ot be cleaned for now. I may have them reupholstered in the future.

This car is in great shape but the engine may be beyond repair. I have been looking for a replacement 1929 194 if you hear of one. I am in the northeast USA

Again thank you so much for the help.

Rich
