What's everyone found for a good replacement fuel level sender for a 1942 passenger car? The one on dad's '42 Fleetline has sunk, but appears to still work, as it move a little when I drive over a bump. Maybe I just take it out and replace the float?

@tiny ground should be good. I see the needle move a little bit when driving around, and it's smooth, like the float is moving a little in the tank, not like a loose electrical connection.
Andy, I agree with your initial thought about replacing the float, the cork deteriorates creating the symptoms you describe. I'd avoid replacing the sending unit if at all possible unless you can find a NOS one and even then, you'd be starting out with a 50+ year cork. While the sending unit is out, ground it with a jumper wire and stroke it to see if the gauge corresponds correctly. Mike
