Looking to replace the original front seat coverings on my 1951 Styleline Deluxe 2 door 6 passenger.

After 74 years the coverings are faded, and on the bench portion it's deteriorated to the point of splitting & tearing.

I want to keep the original 1951 Chevrolet color removed link

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks!

Thanks for pointing out those options Chip. I wasn't aware of anyone besides SMS.

Thank you Tiny!  I have contacted SMS....they do have reproductions of the original fabrics, and can make replacement coverings. However there would be at least a 6 plus month wait, and if you look at the complaints on the Better Business Bureau...there have been some customers that have waited years to get their items from them. They did say they had the material in stock, was quote $165.00 per yard, but didn't say how quickly they could ship it out to me. I have a reputable upholstery shop that will make new coverings for me. Probably the way I'm going to go....

@daniel-a-rand SMS does make an excellent original looking product. Six months will most likely end up being a lot longer. I purchased my interior upholstery from them and a 4 month quote turned into 2 years and it was a very frustrating purchase as either they outright misspeak or are incompetent at estimating a delivery date. I spent 46 years in the truck parts business and SMS was the worst vendor I have ever encountered or dealt with.

I have bought material from SMS and received it in reasonable time but never had purchased anything from them that requires them to sew or assemble as I do that myself.

Just wanted to thank you for the info you posted, and to update what I found after researching.

Yes, SMS does have reproduction material, and they have patterns for my '51 Styleline Deluxe Sport Coupe to make the coverings.

I ordered samples, and they matched perfectly.

The material is very expensive($165.00/yard) as well as the custom made covers($595.00 just for the front bench portion).

After viewing customer comments on the better Business Bureau raised concerns about delivery times and quality/workmanship of their products.

However I did fond another company that had the reproduction gray stripped material I was looking for at about the same price per yard.

The company's name is Original Auto Fabrics, LLC out of Oklahoma City, OK and they had it in stock as well. I ordered samples.

However their material had a different texture to it, and wasn't sure they had the solid darker gray material for the top of the front backrests.

So.....I called SMS, ordered the 4.5 yards of the stripped gray and 1.5 yards of the solid dark gray material(you do the math...ouch).

They promised me they would ship the material within 5-7 days.....at that point I kept my fingers crossed to delivery.

Long story short, they shipped and I received the material in about ten days.

I have a friend who I worked for about 20 years ago who owns a very respectable custom upholstery/custom car & truck accessory shop who is going to make the replacement coverings for me.....but he's 1600 miles away from me in New Hampshire.....however I'll be spending the rest of the summer in NH, so it'll work out just fine.

Now I have to remove the front seat to get the old coverings off to be used as patterns.

Have a great summer!

Chip,

I did contact National Chevy Complete Interior Kits, but they didn't have anything for my particular application.

Also I spoke to Gina at Ciadella Interiors, they also didn't have what I needed, and suggested SMS as well.

See my recent posting to Tiny on updated information.

I ordered material and got it within 10 days or so, but the horror stories like yours seems to be the norm on custom made items. Waiting 2 plus years is totally unacceptable, and many complain about waiting that long and end up with extremely poor fit, finish, and craftsmanship.

I did ok with just ordering material from them.

I did end up ordering just material from them, and got it within 10 days or so.

After reading all the negative comments on the BBB, I would never order anything custom made from them...big red flags there!

@daniel-a-rand The biggest issue I had was I checked availability of the material before placing my order and they said they had the material in stock. Four months later when checking on the order they no longer had material and it had to be made. They either sold the material after I placed my order or did not have it . Then the customer service representative denied ever saying that they had the material .

That’s just very poor customer service and communication. I lucked out with my purchase, and the shop in New Hampshire that’s making the new coverings for me has a customer who waited over two years for door panels and upholstery, and one received was some of the worst workmanship he’s ever seen, and had to rework just about everything to fit and look properly.

It sounds like you made out ok, but waiting that long is unacceptable.
