Hi All. I am working at liquidating my brother's possessions (he has dementia). He has a 1927 chevy that he was in the process of restoring over the last 25 years. I am trying to figure out details in order to get a duplicate title - or if a title is needed. I find a stamp under the hood that states "Fisher Body Corp" Job 7230, Body S 8328. Can anyone tell me if that would be considered the VIN? or is there another location? And what can you tell me from the Fisher tag? Thanks for any help.
In the majority of states the engine serial number was used as the vehicle ID number pre-1955. Some states used the vehicle serial number that was stamped on a metal plate nailed to the passenger side of the main sill or the front seat riser.

Howdy, welcome to the site. Pre 1955 many (most?) states used the engine number is the "VIN" on the title. Others used the unit serial number, usually on the car's data plate. I don't know the location of the data plate on a 27 but someone will be along who does. Your best course of action would be to contact your state's licensing authority to determine what their requirements for antique car titling are.
Edit: I see Chip beat me to it and provided more info. Thank you Chip!

The ID plate would be located on the side of the passenger seat. It is visably when the door is open. The Fisher body plate just shows the body style. The ID plates were nailed into the seat will 4 very small nails and are usually missing after 100 years. Some people use the engine ID number to register the car. Job #7230 is a 2-passenger coupe.
Thanks all for your responses! That was very helpful.
If the name plate is still on your car, post the Car Number here and we'll help you decipher it.

Thanks for additional posts. The Chevy is wedged in the garage, so it will be a while before I can make it to the passenger compartment
