Starters and starter solenoids

Is there a way to test the starter and starter solenoids on a 1950 chevy with 235 engine without taking them off first?

Farmer,

I apologize for not seeing your post sooner. If you have your head under the hood when you energize the solenoid, you should be able to hear and see it thump into the flywheel. If this happens but the starter does not spin, taking the starter off might be your next step. I hope this helps.
