Missing engine serial number

I recently acquired a 235 Thriftmaster that did not have a stamped serial number on the deck below the distributor.  I wasn't sure of how to identify it, except for the conveyor and date stamp.  It appears that is was manufactured on January 25, 1956.  The valve cover has four bolts, and the side cover is small.

CON3 A256

This number is cast into the block forward on the passenger side, just above where the oil pan meets the block.

3764476

Is this missing stamp typical of those years, or was it removed by someone?  If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it.

It may have been a replacement engine that the mechanic didn't bother to re-stamp.

I think...

and I may well be wrong...

because many jurisdictions registered vehicles by the engine serial number,

that area was left unstamped on new replacement engines and short blocks so that the original engine number (vehicle registration number) could be stamped there.

Is the engine or was the engine in a vehicle?
