My friend is rebuilding a 1934 Chevrolet.  The piece of wood that runs along side of the door sill, front to back, has something on it and we aren't sure what it is.  Does anyone know what this piece is for?

That is a button that retains the rubber mat.

Thanks Chip.  That solves a big mystery for him.

@brandon-garrett @chip Sorry Chipster, That button is much bigger than the mat retainer. It is part of the seat adjuster. An inverted channel slides over the top.

Mat retainer pins are about the size of a push pin like you would use to hang a note on a cork message board.

Mike,

I am sure you are correct. Couldn't tell the size from the photo so guessed it was one of the ones to retain the floor mat.
