Center bolt shown in u-joint assembly - what is its function?  Torque requirement?  What size washer and thickness?  Is not mentioned in detailed u-joint assembly instructions from Filling Station, yet shown in their illustration.  Appears to limit back and forth sliding of u-joint on transmission spline.

P.S.  Thanks to all who advised on speedometer gear replacement.  Turns out it was damaged because this bolt came loose!

That bolt secures the u-joint to the transmission mainshaft. As you have learned, fore and aft movement of the joint is bad. A thick flat washer is used with the bolt. I have never torqued one them. I just tighten until it squeaks and ad 1/8 turn.
