Hi,

I have a 33 Eagle with the original manual 3 speed transmission. I believe there are 3 cases, main, free wheel and universal joint. When I add oil to the U-joint case, oil drips from the front main shaft in the bell housing. So, I'm guessing that the seals between the cases are bad as well as the front shaft seal.  I am able to remove the transmission myself but not able to repair as needed.  Can anyone recommend a reputable individual or shop that I can send it to for repair? I live in the Northern Kentucky area, and hope there is someone reasonably close.

Thanks for any replies.

Doug

Hi Doug,

Welcome to the VCCA's website!

I suggest you contact one of our local Chapters (we call them Regions) for their recommendations. Here's a list of the Chapters/Regions, along with contact info: https://vcca.org/regions-chapters/

Cheers, Dean

The ujoint section only requires 4 ounces of oil and if low usually the oil drains to the rear axle thru the driveshaft seal. Strange that it is leaking from  the front of the transmission . The ujoint section normally gets it oil supply from the forward cases thru the bearings. Have you checked the main case oil level? and also the rear axle oil level? After the initial fill of oil to the proper levels the ujoint housing oil level should remain stable unless as mentioned above it leaks thru the driveshaft however that would lead normally to lower oil level in all cases as the main case would supply oil to the freewheeling and ujoint cases thru the bearings.  It is possible that the front bearing cover which has an oil return groove is worn or plugged. You may only need to replace/clean the front cover. There is no seal in the front cover of the transmission-only the oil return groove.

Howdy Doug, welcome to the VCCA. In addition to the list of Regions link provided by Dean, at the top of the page you see a blue bar with a number of buttons. Toward the right is a button Rosters with a down arrow. Click that button then click Member Roster. You can search for all club members in Kentucky and get their contact information. I'd wager an email or two will get you the information you seek. Only club members have access to that information. Good luck and welcome again.

Hi Doug

Here is a link (see below) to the rebuilding of a 33 Transmission that doesn't have the freewheel.  It's doesn't have any seals just reverse threads the sorta screw the oil back into the transmission, you can modify if for a seal but it requires machining.  I didn't use this transmission bit it shows what you have.  On the u-joint area I would recommend using Corn Head grease instead of oil, its available at any John Deer store, maybe online.  It will soften and become like thick oil when hot then when cool set up like grease. It will lubricate your u-joint just fine. I have 7000 miles on my 33 and no issues with the grease.
