I found no washer when I took mine apart. I installed the new gear style oil pump and am about to set the distributor. Do i need a thrust washer

What does it look like? (perhaps a picture)

How does it get installed? In the body and then push in the oil pump or drop in the hole before setting in the distributor?

Where do I get one? The Filling Station?

Hello 29Red4,

The answer to your thrust washer question can be found in the closed VCCA chat forum. Look for "1931 Chevy 194 cid torque settings" by Stargate31 10/11/08 07:38pm #128753. Read all the posts.

Thanks for the replies. Mine was one of many without the washer but I have ordered one.

Just an update.

With a thrust washer in place, last night was the night, The engine started and ran for the first time in almost 20 years.

I do have one more questions regarding the distributor.

The distributor moves easily in the block. When I tighten the clamp on the advance/retard arm then I am unable to move the distributor using the knob in the cab.

Any ideas?

I havent done anything with the advance system on a 29 so I could well be wrong. With the clamp loose does all the cab controls move freely and only lock up when you tighten the clamp, if the controls dont work follow the linkage and free up and lubricate all joints.

There should be a slot in the horizontal part of the clamp with a washer and spring on the shoulder bolt that goes into the slot. That allows movement of the arm to  retard the spark with the "spark" knob on the dash panel. The only time is is absolutely necessary to retard the spark is if you hand crank the engine to start it. Otherwise the mechanical advance on late '27 and newer Chevrolets takes the place of the advance/retard lever on the steering column.

Photos will help us determine what clamp you're referring to.
