I brought the 1954 Belair home this morning and spent the day doing general cleanup on it. I was concerned about the interior, but found that it will clean up very nicely. The car is beautiful everywhere. Not ready for the road yet. I'm waiting for the rebuild kit for the power brake master cylinder. I should have it on Saturday. I'm very confident that the engine will be excellent as is the rest of the car once I get it serviced, battery installed, fuel system checked (a new fuel tank came with the car). I have a set of tires like the new fronts for the rear when I can get them installed. Let me know what your think of her now:

Hi Jerry

What do I think?

I think you've got yourself a really REALLY nice original car!  👍

I think you're lucky to have a car like that, and the car is lucky to have found an owner like you who will preserve it in it's original splendor.

Once you get it road ready all that's left for you to do is start going on club tours. I just happen to know of one coming up in October based out of the Wichita KS area. (Full disclosure, I'm the tour organizer and yes, this is blatant self promotion 😀 ) We'd love to have you on the tour and you'll meet some great people & make new friends.

Thanks…yep, she’s a beauty. It has some warts that I will work out.

@tiny Strange you should mention that, the glove box was full of VCCA entry, judging and car show paraphernalia. The car was repainted as was immediately clear and I think it’s a driver more than a judged show car, but on a cruise with the club, it would be fun. Thanks for the comment.

Here's a quick overview of the tour in case you're interested.

@tiny I love that kind of car activity. Do those who are outside of Witchita drive their pre-55 cars to the meet or do they trailer. At the moment, I wouldn't trust the 41 Chevy to travel that distance and the 54 is not running yet.

After spending a day and a half getting the 54 looking decent, I reinstalled the battery box and new battery and powered her up. Tested the headlights and a couple other things and it seemed everything was working. I thought: What the heck? Poured a little fuel in the carb and turned it over. On the first try, it tried to start then, more fuel did nothing. I probably got the distributor wet when I power washed the engine bay. I put the battery charger on it and thought to charge it for 2 hours which ends in just 15 minutes. I'm going to go out and give it a try.

It depends on the owner. Most trailer their cars, some drive them. We have adequate trailer parking space set aside if you decide to come. We'll start with a Monday afternoon visit to a member's car collection for the early arrivals. Monday evening will be a hamburger/french fry & icecream social where we'll go over the week ahead. Friday evening will be the closing banquet. Plan to arrive at the host hotel Sunday evening or Monday morning to get in on everything.

I have had great success getting this old car ready for the road. I replaced the fuel tank, blew out all the fuel lines, put some fuel in and primed the Carb and it didn’t hit a lick when I turned it over. I then replaced the points and condensor with Pertronics electronic parts and immediately it sounded like it wanted to start, only as long as I primed it. So, back to the fuel feed. Just happened to have a new fuel pump in my bag of goodies and wrestled with it for what seemed like hours. Once that was in and all the lines tightened securely, voila’ it cranked and ran perfectly. No smoke, no missing and it runs like a sewing machine. I found a bad leak in the lower radiator hose going to the transmission oil cooling device. After fighting to get that little short hose off, I discovered that the inlet connection for the hose was mostly gone, whether it’s rust or corrosion that caused it, I don’t know. There’s not enough of the connection pipe to get a new hose and clamp installed, so I thought, “Surely someone makes a replacement part!” Couldn’t find one.

So, that’s the question, where can I find a replacement transmission oil cooler device???  I searched the internet and couldn’t find one anywhere. Not sure where to go next? HELP!!!

@jerry-berry That's a tough one. Mine was pinholed but fixable. In the absence of a reparable core or a replacement the only option I see is to fab in a generic tranny cooler and put the OEM part on the shelf until/when someone starts repoping them. Before you do that you might put an ad in the classifieds Parts Wanted and see if someone has one laying around.

<Found this one on ebay.> You might contact the seller & ask him to cut the old hose ends off to inspect the inlet/outlet.
