Hey ya all. Just picked up a 33 1.5 ton dually. Cant find a service maual yet so will ask here. Noticing that the drive shaft is solid, should i assume the lube is continuous from tranny to differential or is it 3 different sections. What kind of oil too. Thanks in advance

Hi Mike

Welcome!

And thanks for posting a picture.  We like pictures!

The transmission u-joint and differential are "mostly" separate units, but there is no seal between the the transmission and u-joint, and not a great one behind that.

I assume your truck will be the same as cars in that the u-joint will receive oil from the transmission, but will need to be filled if emptied during overhauls etc.

I use a GL-5 85W-140 in my 1929 car but use GL-5 80W-90 in my '46 3/4 ton.

And no... modern GL-5's will NOT harm bronze bushings etc.

Hope that helps.

Hopefully Mike (35Mike that is) will add more as he is the 30's truck guy here.  🙂

I have not. The manual for my 38 is an exact reproduction of the original. There's a 34 manual on the Old Online Chevy Manuals site that can get you buy until you buy one.

Mike,

I was just researching what lubes to use on my 1936 1-1/2 ton Chevy. The 1936 specs call for gear lube but the method of adding is through a grease zerk. What the...?? I have a couple of tubes of corn head grease that fit in a regular cartridge type grease gun. Corn head grease is a flowable (is that a word?) grease that is thicker than gear oil. I'm going to try that. It is also suitable for your steering box.

I like your truck. Here is a picture of mine.

Thanks! Yes there is a grease zerk on my tranny. Would never guessed it to be a fill point. Both your cars are cool!

That picture is about 6 years old. Since then, the car has new blackball tires and the wheels have been powder coated in the proper Cream Medium color. It completely changes the look of the car.

The truck is unchanged. I drive it as often as I can. I had it out for some errands on Friday.

Here is a picture of the car as it looks now.

That one was held despite all the hype of impending Covid disaster. Had a great time and no one got seriously ill. One couple went home early only to find out they had a mild case of a normal cold.
