Safety Star Backup Camera

Couldn’t find a natural home for this post so I created one.

I had been wanting to install a backup camera on my 1939 instead of having my son stand outside and yell if a neighbor kid darted behind me while backing out. But it was important that it be mounted incognito and not require a screen inside the car. I noticed the light on my safety star was roughly the diameter of one of those cheapo WiFi backup cameras on Amazon. Plus I already had 12v there so…

It took a little bit of measuring and I had to fabricate a bracket, but I now have an incognito backup camera that transmits video to my iPhone. From 3ft away it looks like any other Safety Star. After reversing I put away the iPhone and there are no wires, screen, etc.

@39master85 Thanks for the link. I did see this on Amazon but I didn't want the whole bar, just a small camera. I see hat you simple removed the electronis from the bracket and used that only. Great idea! I might just go ahead with this and try it.

Be sure to check the voltage required for each camera. All I found require greater than 6 volts. A small lawn mower 12 Volt battery can run the camera for days (maybe months) before requiring a recharge. A small battery charger can do the job in a few hours and the battery is small enough to move to a location where recharging is safe. I have ordered a camera for my cars that I take on VCCA tours. Most are six volt so I will use the small 12 volt battery that I use to power my trailer winch. I can do several pulls before a recharge is needed.

@chip - that is a really good idea to run it off of a separate local battery! I didn’t even think of that… This camera comes with two cords - a 5v USB or you can direct wire it to a 6v or 12v power supply. Dropping a dedicated small battery in the trunk would have saved me a lot of time drilling holes and running that dang wire under the carpet - hahaha
