1935 Standard Coupe

I have been working on the 1935 Standard Coupe, that I bought in New York, last summer. I sold it to my friend Steve and we have been getting it ready for the road. It had a growl in the transmission so we pulled it out and discovered loose bearings and worn bushings and shaft at the countershaft. Assuming "no time like the present", we went through my parts stash and put in every new part I had available. The list included:

Main Drive gear (input shaft)

front and rear bearings

pilot bearing for main shaft to main drive gear

2nd and high gear sliding clutch

Counter gear

shift fork assembly.

He sourced a counter gear shaft and speedometer gear set from eBay plus transmission and ball housing gasket sets from Bob Marx at Marxparts.

We got the transmission back in place a couple of days ago and the rear axle assembly buttoned back yesterday. Tomorrow we hope to finish the rear axle installation and new brake cables, as well.

We have been at this for quite a while now. I hope to wrap it up in a couple more days.

Steven, thanks for your interest..

Today, we installed the reconditioned gas tank and finished the rear axle installation. We have new brake cables on the back and the fronts waiting for their turn on Monday. We will adjust the brakes by following the instructions in the shop manual. This worked well on my '35 Coupe, so I have high hopes that Steve will have good brakes when all is said and done.

Before placing it in the the tank, we tested the new sending unit from The Filling Station. We hooked it to the original wiring in the car, attached a ground wire, and watched the dash gauge react as we moved the float through its range.

I'll report back after our next session.

The car is setting on the rear tires, again. The front axle is up and wheels are off. Back at it at 8 AM Monday.

I'm hoping for two 1935 Standard coupes, side by side, at Cars and Coffee, this coming Saturday morning

Steve came soon after 8 A.M. I had the barn opened up and the fans running. Before starting on the brake cables, we decided to pull the front hubs to repack the wheel bearings. We found brake linings worn almost to the rivets so we headed over to my storage building in the next county. It is about a 20 minute drive, but worthwhile because we scored a set of linings with rivets and brought home the rivet machine to punch out the old ones and clinch the new ones.

We worked until about 3:30 and it was 95 degrees or so by that time. we called it a day.

Another day with unexpected obstacles. We got the front brake cables on, front wheel bearings are re-packed and adjusted. Front brakes are adjusted to a starting point. 

The problem we ran into is that the brakes have a centering feature. There is a bolt through each backing plate that, when loosened, allows the brake shoe assembly, on that wheel to center itself in the drum when the brake is applied. Three of the four were seized up. The rear drums are removed by pulling the axle shafts. This, of course, means taking off the differential cover, etc, etc, etc. We had this all apart and had put it back (yes oil too) together. I didn't think to check out the centering thing a ma bob while it was apart. So now, the diff has been drained and the cover removed so the axles can come out tomorrow to deal with the brakes.

We read the capacity chart wrong and put an extra pint of 90wt oil in the transmission. We had not put the top on the trans yet so we poured the oil in the top. Later, Steve noticed it dripping out so we removed the side plug and allowed it to drain dow to the proper level.

It was another day of challenges, but we will not be deterred. Tomorrow is another day,
