Octane Selector Adjustment

On my 51 216  CI stock engine, I set the timing so the pointer is right on the mark and I wanted to adjust the octane selector to give some more advance as per the service manual. I loosened the nut next to the scale but the vacuum advance would not budge. Does the distributer clamp need to also be loosened? What am I doing wrong? Thanks for any help you can give me.

Hi Jeff

You shouldn't loosen the clamp to adjust the octane selector.

If you loosen the bolt at the octane selector scale enough, you should be able to move the vacuum advance/octane selector unit.

But... remember that to move it, you will be flexing/bending the steel vacuum line connected to it.

That line can put up a fair bit of resistance.  🙂

@ole-olson Thanks for your response. I will take the line off the vacuum advance and try again and then put it back on. This is done with the engine off so there is no need to plug the vacuum line.
