Wheel lug bolt replacement

Hi Guys,

3 out of the 6 lug bolts broke off on left rear side of my 31 chevy roadster.

How do one replace these?

Do one need to remove the cover plate inside the wheel hub to get to the lug bolts or does the lug bolts keep this cover plate to the hub?

Do one need to drill the lug bolts out or can one hit them out with a hammer and punch? Can the drum break in this process?

Thanks in advance

My 38's rear studs mount to the axle flange. I've not had to remove my axles so I'm not sure of the steps to do so. One may not need to remove the axle to R&R the studs. Every stud I've ever seen drives out the back to remove and are driven or pulled through from the back to mount. Look at a picture of wheel studs and you'll get some idea of how they mount. Someone should be along shortly with more specific info for you.

Replacement studs are available. Most auto parts stores either have them or can order them. I use long sockets or sections of pipe to support the back side and a hammer and punch to remove the bad studs. I install lug nuts flush with the end and a brass drift to remove good ones. If you have a press it can also be used. It normally takes too long to adjust the press so hammer and punch is what I use. If I have several that need to be removed and installed or the hammer method doesn't want to budge them I use the 20 ton press. Backups are necessary with the press. It can bust up stuff too easily.
