1965 Chevrolet C10

Hi folks, so my 3 speed, control on the dash heater blower stopped working after work the other morning. As in, I turned it on, it went off... has not come back on.

When I got home I checked the fuse with a multimeter(ohms) and it tested good out of the fuse panel... checked the voltage across the fuse when I put it back in, still 12v.

Started looking for shorts or a pulled wire, nothing so far.

I guess the motor could have totally gone out at that moment or the switch on the dash which has been in there since I bought it 21 years ago.

Anyway, looking for other things to check, ways to troubleshoot.

Suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

I have the 1963 shop manual and the 1965 supplement as well so I can look stuff up in there too.

Based on my experience with heater and AC fan switches I suspect it is the problem. Often if you wiggle and giggle the switch the fan will start and stop if the switch is the problem.

Does it work on the highest speed but not the slower speeds? If only high speed it may be the speed control resistor which is often mounted in the air duct. If not working at all sounds like the motor is a failure

Right now it is doing a lot of nothing. I had turned it on to leave work and then it went off... and nothing since.

I have had that resistor issue before, I will double check that... I think I checked the wiring to there, but doesn't hurt to check again.

Thank you for the replies folks.

It was getting power to the switch heater motor switch and off the switch on the different settings, checked it behind the heater box, that plug down there, it was getting power there as well on different settings.

I have the blower motor out now, parts searching tomorrow.

Thanks for the replies.

Well, the new blower motor did not come on at all all plugged in and mounted.

Bummer.

However, I tested it off the battery and the new blower motor works at least.

I have a blower motor resistor ordered as I am running out of ideas.

p.s. for fun I tested the old motor, it still didn't run. I guess multiple things failed at once, maybe. It was only 12 years old.

I dont know how you tested for power but I will guess with a test light of some sort connected to a point on the truck body, this will show power supply but not if there is a bad ground connection for the fan.

digital multi-meter on the volts setting.

That is possible, but sorta weird that it happened all of a sudden like without something breaking somewhere. Could be a short I haven't found yet, I dunno. I will fight with it some more after my parts arrive.
